This Build Your Own Wharenui Kitset is great for kids to play home, both individually and together.
The pack contains 9 balsa wood pieces that fit together to make a model Maori meeting house, the most important building on a marae.
Most wharenui are named after and represent an important Maori ancestory, or an event in Maori history. They are beautiful buildings, covered inside and out with carvings, tukutuku panels and designs that commemorate the past and present people of that marae.
There is significance in all aspects of a wharenui, including the carvings, the structure, and the placement of the wharenui.
Children can learn the structure of the wharenui as they build it, learning the names of the parts of the building as they put it together.
Suitable for children age 3+.
The pack includs the 9 balsa wood pieces, plus a booklet with teaching notes and a game.
The parts can be reversed so children can decorate the wharenui as they choose.
Designed in collaboration with Takapaukura, a Maori education consultancy.
